The aim of this course is to disseminate the use of the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER) facility among researchers interested in its exploitation for the purposes of analysis of higher education systems.
ETER is a facility funding by the European Commission (DG EAC) which provides a census of Higher Education Institutions in Europe, including basic information on organizational characteristics, educational and research activities, as well as staff and finances of HEIs. It covers most European Union countries, as well as well as a few non-EU countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland) and provides data for the year 2011.
Experience with the ETER predecessor EUMIDA showed that these data are highly helpful for a range of topics in research policies and higher education, including analysis of efficiency of HEIs, studies of diversity of higher education systems and of differentiation processes, analyses of research specialization and internationalization of HEIs. Also, current work in RISIS is demonstrating the potential of this dataset for matching with other data sources, including bibliometric data, webometrics data and data on participation to European programs.
In this context, the course will pursue the following goals:
Introduction to the ETER facility. General concepts, variables, data structure and comparability issues
The scholarly and policy relevance of ETER. Examples of analyses based on ETER data and matching with other data.
The ETER lab. Guided session on how to analyze ETER data.
Group work. Case studies of descriptive analyses using ETER.
Presentation of the analyses by groups and final discussion

Participants are strongly advised to indicate specific research topics which they would like to investigate through ETER. These topics might be included in the group works.
Participants are asked to bring their own laptop.
